I’ve just finished watching Spaced -the turn-of-the-millenium comedy replete with clever references to pop culture and surreal adventures- for what must be the third time.
The Channel 4 cult sitcom follows twenty-somethings Tim (Simon Pegg) and Daisy (Jessica Hynes) who meet through a mutual need for a cheap home in London – with Tim having been dumped by his live-in girlfriend and Daisy deciding to leave the squat where she was staying. They finally move into a flat after posing as a professional couple, despite only knowing each other for an alarmingly short period of time. Having successfully fooled alcoholic landlady Marsha (Julia Deakin), we witness the pair’s adventures accompanied by Tim’s army mad best friend Mike (Nick Frost), eccentric artist neighbour Brian (Mark Heap) and Daisy’s best friend Twist (Katy Carmichael).
It was upon subsequent Googling of miniature Schnauzers* and the show in general when I came across this bombshell. It’s only a flat for rent on bloody 23 Meteor Street!
Who wouldn’t pay 2 grand a month to live in this nigh on mythical palace? Just try not to compare the rent to what Tim and Daisy paid in 1999 – only £90 a week. At least it looks as though they’ve done it up a little, you know, gotten rid of any twins lurking in closets and whatnot…
Spaced is truly one of the best comedy series to ever to come out of the UK (and it’s got nothing to do with my soft spot for Simon Pegg). I urge you to watch it if you haven’t already done so. And if you have, I think we all agree that it’s about time you watched it again. Look, I’ve even found all the episodes on YouTube with Spanish subtitles. De nada.
Here are some of my favourite clips from Spaced:
Season 1 rave – from 17:43
Colin, Paintball and Pom Pom – from 14:30
One of Tyres’ raves / “Last time I seen Mike he was on Crimewatch”
Tim’s plan > Daisy’s plan / “Fatty Boom Batty”
The Phantom Menace
*Skip to the end… How many Schnauzers called Colin do you think there are in the world? There’ll be one more if I get my way.
