It’s the early 1960s, the Korean War is over and the townsfolk of Oceanside, a typical Calfornian coastal town, are going about their quaint little suburban lives.
But everything isn’t quite what it seems.
Presenting Agustín Ferrer‘s newest addition to his published works, Cazador de Sonrisas, or The Smile Hunter. This thrilling comic tells the tale of local family man and respected orthodontist Herbert F. Dunne who has a caring wife and daughter, a large house and a well-paid job. Despite the relatively normal exterior, all is not quite as meets the eye – Doctor Dunne is deeply troubled by unhealthy obsessions, a drug addiction and other dark secrets. Things take a turn for the worst when Oceanside residents start being attacked, and Dunne thinks he might know who’s to blame…
A shocking chain of events subsequently unravels – something which threatens to expose not only the identity of the murderer but also the existence of Dunne’s seedy extra-curricular activities.
Often uncomfortable and surprisingly disturbing, Cazador de Sonrisas offers tension, intrigue and violence via beautifully drawn vignettes that give us a colourful insight into life in 1960s America – think big cars, big hair, sharp suits and vivid colours.
So sit back, relax and breath deeply. You’ll get tied up in the dark world of Doctor Dunne in no time.
